about

Deep Cuts is a band with a story to tell on their debut EP, and the story is one of their homeland: The Greater Houston-Galveston Coastal Corridor. Excepting a certain zillionaire R&B diva, this is not an area known for its musical offerings. With the zesty Latin sounds of Love Grows, Deep Cuts changes that. Their songs are bursts of pop energy fueled by Latin syncopations and earworm choruses, each with its own small slice of the greater story. Never had a minor panic attack dodging the hordes of daytrippers bustling along 61st and Seawall? Listen to the frenzied hits that open "Causeway" and you'll know. Never sat in midday beach traffic heading south on I-45, the AC out and Tres Hombres stuck in the CD player? Listen to the woozy guitar that permeates "Serpents" and you'll know. Never made the drunken trip from the island back into the city, your wallet empty and your love life lacking? Listen to Love Grows and you'll know.

Track Name: Cigarette Boat
Spaceship on your license plate
Front flip on the interstate
You always speed everywhere you go
I see you go on a cigarette boat

Blooming like a bird of paradise
Open wound by your own device
You kiss a man with a gun in his hand
I see you go on a cigarette boat

Tell me something I don't already know
Where'd you go on that cigarette boat
Where'd you go on that cigarette boat
Track Name: Causeway
Across the great causeway there's a place near Sunset Route
Past the Galvez and palm trees and pastel leisure suits
We went there to drink and gaze toward the gulf by moonlight
I know you so well I can hear your voice when you write

You said if love grows
Somewhere we both know
Will it push us out
Will it make us cry
Will it make us shout

Cause I don't know why we felt the need to do that
It's all rushing back

South down the seawall there's a cove that bears your name
Despite four storms its shoreline still looks the same
Despite five years and no matter how hard I try
Can't forget where you went when you lied down and curled up died

You said if love grows
Somewhere we both know
Will it push us out
Will it make us cry
Will it make us shout

Cause I don't know why we felt the need to do that
It's all rushing back
Track Name: Serpents
We walked along the wall
Shared some alcohol
Felt small against the sea
And shuddered at it all
The countless condo lights
Sentries in the night
Stood guard along the shore
When she said she might

Then I started to black out
And she started to black out
We started to black out

I don't remember much but I'm sure that we kissed
Undulating like two serpents in the mist
I don't remember much I'm not sure what I missed
Undulating there, two serpents in the mist

We woke up in a daze
Ultraviolet rays
How my head was pounding
Let me count the ways

She looked me in the eyes
Said that we might try
That's when we first noticed
The bruises on her thighs

Then she started to back out
And I started to back out
We started to back out

I don't remember much but I'm sure that we kissed
Undulating like two serpents in the mist
I don't remember much I'm not sure what I missed
Undulating there, two serpents in the mist
Track Name: Alchemist
I thought you were an alchemist and the path you'd led me down would turn to gold
I thought you might conjure up some fire and finally save me from the cold
But it turned out to be a parlor trick, a slight of hand, a ruse
Now I don't put much faith in magic or witchcraft or you

When the spirit left the body I thought that you could put them back together
I thought that you could part the seas, blot out the sun, even command the weather
But it turned out to be you'd rather go on keeping them apart
Now I don't put much faith in your demands or your dark arts

Alchemist
I've lifted the curtain
I've stumbled through smoke and mirrors
And now I'm certain
You are not what you appear
Alchemist

Would you turn it into gold
Track Name: Arcus Cloud
The last time that I saw you
The last time that I said your name out loud
In the sea I saw a calm
And in the skies I saw an arcus cloud

It spanned the whole horizon
Hung over Matagorda Bay
And ever since you left
I'd see that cloud each day

Arcus cloud
Roll around
Cover my eyes like a silver cotton shroud
Clever crown
Over San Luis sands or above my Houston house

At night I've heard your whispers
The ocean breeze will softly sing your song
I wandered out into the palms
Moonlight seldom shows you where you're wrong

It spanned the whole horizon
Through darkness through the day
And ever since you left
I've been here at the bay

Blacking out
By the bow
Cover my eyes with a silver cotton shroud
Clever crown
I swear in the sky that there was an arcus cloud
Track Name: Barely There
Went on the water
All the stars were shimmering
Right through the dunes
How the wind is whistling
Said I love you
How my eyes were glistening
Said I love you
You weren't even listening

Took you in my arms
Kept you from your shivering
I felt you move
Just a gentle quivering
Caught your eye
And I started whispering
Said I love you
You weren't even listening

Barely there and unaware
I stared at you a while you were barely there
Barely there went off somewhere
I stared at you a while you were barely there

The stars were gone
Hid behind the covering
Of a rolling cloud
Cause a front was coming in
I thought I loved you
How the thought was lingering
I said I love you
You weren't even listening

Barely there and unaware
I stared at you a while you were barely there
Barely there went off somewhere
I stayed with you a while you were barely there
Barely there just empty air
I carried you a while you were barely there
